Exciting Blog Title Tuesday!

In an attempt to take a departure from the string of posts that mostly ended up like this:

I'll do something that at least has some content.

Did you see this: 5-Year-Old Completes Half Marathon in 2:22:25, about 40 minutes faster than the only other five-year-old known to have finished a half marathon.

I saw an interesting post about "city hill running", also known as, running up parking garages. Has anyone had success with this? A lot of.. dangers once they get busy, but hey, we are a wild folk.

Over the weekend I went to my first night out with the dads in our area (the moms met up at our house with the kids), and what did we do? Sat around a fire outside all evening, drink, and eat meat.

It was actually really relaxing and a good time. It helped take the jankiness off the attitude I have had recently. Maybe I just needed the social interaction or have that caveman experience to help settle me down?

Of course, this little cheeky face always helps bring me back to reality and how good life is:

And for all your mirror gawkers, here is my progress at the gym:

Now that I got you all super excited:

I'll talk about my down the road running plans.

I've had some changes at work which require me to leave the house a lot earlier. So no more running until 6am. I've played around with some schedules:
1. Break up my runs, do part of the miles before work, and part at the gym... But this wouldn't be as satisfying (TWSS)
2. Do all my runs super early and get home from work a little later... Don't really want to do that to my family on a constant basis.

3. Do all my running to work (or during my lunch break if it is a short run). It is about 11.5 miles to work if I took the most direct walking path per google.. but I don't want to go west and down Damen at 5am, plus too many intersections. So I looked at going down the Lakefront path to Roosevelt and to work.. about 13.4 miles.  Obviously too far to run 5 days a week (for me). I may do that like once a week for a mid week long run (with warm up and cool down). But even then, that is farther down the road.  But what I can do, take the bus to Michigan ave, and that is a little over 6 miles from my office. Okay, good for a short run. Just run north on the Lakefront path for another mile or two to get extra miles in. I'm guessing I'll think of a few more variations on the - Bus to my starting point - idea.  I'll have to move a lot of food and cloths to my closet at work. This will allow me to leave the house at a reasonable time, shower at work, maintain my work schedule, and still do a midday workout.
I just wanted to use this gif, but it doesn't fit with my post at all.

But of course, I first still need to figure out what is wrong with my chest. The pressure comes around for a couple days, then dissipates, and returns again. I don't think it is my heart (but that will be my first specialist and giant bill I'm sure), but we'll see.

Also, I haven't read blogs since... last Wednesday? I'll catch up on reading soon! Hold tight blogsters.

And tomorrow is my wife's birthday! Don't let me forget!!

  1. Uh, is Damen not safe??? Not that I'm ever out on it at 5am anyway... :) What about running to different El stops and then taking the train to work from there? Then you wouldn't have to run 11-13 miles every time you run to work.

I've never heard of people running up and down parking garages - that's crazy! Although, we do have one at work, so maybe I'll give it a shot next time I have a run date after work (I get extra points for doing it with a heavy backpack, right?).

  2. I like the idea of running up parking garages.. maybe when I train for my next Boston? I'd probably only do it in a group though - too dangerous alone!

I like the idea of runcommuting, I've thought about it but I don't live far enough from my office (and we don't have showers...) so, its not for me right now but you could totally do it. When I was in college and training for my first marathon, I'd split up my mid-week long run so I'd do half before my 8 am class and then half after. It really didn't affect my fitness at all and you could play with the speed a bit, doing the first run at tempo pace and the second at a recovery/easy pace. Just a thought!

I hope you figure out your chest issues soon!

I've head of people running parking garages, but I haven't done it myself. I have done lunges up the ramps at parking garages, but not by choice it was directed my my college strength coach. They sure did burn!

  4. Or you could run after work! Come to the dark side! We have...cupcakes!!

I'm really interested to hear what comes of all your chest business. This is probably something I'm going to have to bring up when I go in for a physical in a few months...boo. I much prefer to live in blissful ignorance! I'm 95% sure my issues are with my lungs, not my heart, because generally my chest pain feels like my bronchial tube is achy. Is that even a thing? I have no idea. I like to blame it all on the fact that I had pneumonia when I was a kid. When in doubt, point fingers at your childhood. That's my approach to dealing with adulthood problems. Haha.

  5. It sounds like you are entering my world where morning running is not exactly an option... Which is why getting off work at 3:30 and running after work is perfect for me... But that's not an option for everyone. Hope you figure something out soon!

Also - REALLY hope the chest is nothing serious - Fingers crossed for you - Would lots of excel spreadsheets help make you feel better? :-p

And lastly - Happy Birthday to your wife!

  6. Aww, happy birthday to your wife!

How long will the new work schedule last? Sounds like a bunch of not so ideal running options! :(

  7. Hmm, tricky situation with fitting in the running. Hopefully you can work out a plan that ticks all your boxes!

  8. Happy birthday in advance to your wife!!! Bummer to hear about the new work schedule, but I vote for option #3. I have considered running the parking garages near where I live, but haven't actually gotten the courage to try it yet. Maybe in the dead of the winter when there aren't a lot of other options!?!?!?!?

  9. Nothing is safe once I'm on it! I'd like to avoid running through a lot of intersections. Partial run commute sounds good. You should have a run date every day!

  10. You could to a cops and robbers run in the garage! pretend you are being chased!
I have some leads on my chest, not what I was expecting.

  13. Morning running I think will remain my only option for runs longer than 40 minutes, I just have to make it work!

  14. New work schedule is rather permanent I believe. I could flex it, but I don't want to get home later

If it's any consolation I haven't run at all in the past 7 days (sinuses). It might be a few more days until I feel well enough to pound the pavement. I occasionally feel aches and pains now in my legs as they start to unwind themselves from the previous 12 weeks of non-stop running/punishment. On the positive side, I have an extra hour or two per day to get stuff done around the house I've been neglecting. Anyway, hope you get rid of that chest stuff soon. Oh, by the way, your wife's birthday is tomorrow. :)
