Hey Bro, Whatcha Thinking About?

So what is going on since my last super exciting post? I've done a couple easy runs based around a time rather than a distance, slowly working my way back to being..

My right leg is perfect, much like this:

My left leg.. the problem leg.. is more like this:

It feels much more crampy and strained feeling throughout the day. Mostly in my calf. I'd say maybe at 60-70%. Running feels better at least than walking. I'll keep my pace fun until this clears up. Not having timed pressure makes it easier to deal with if I end up feeling actual pain while running. I restarted my weight routine I cooled off of the last 10 days, and will be restarting the exercises I was doing at physical therapy during my lunch breaks as well.

I'm still trying to get a handle on eating like mortal, and fail miserably every day.. eventually feeling like this:

I posted this next part on twitter the other day, but as more of your runs may happen in the dark, PLEASE invest in some reflective gear, a vest, jacket, lights, something. Even though in Chicago we are pretty lucky to have the lakefront path and not get hit by a car, it would be nice to see someone running towards you from more than 40 feet away.

I just bought one of these: MAXSA Innovations Reflective Safety Vest - Model 20026

I'm pretty sure you'll see me and give me a side five right?

Not much else. Tomorrow, easy run for about 50 minutes.

Side thought: Should we start a morning motivation crew to make sure you get out for your run?

And now I hope your reaction to the end of this blog post is more like this:

And not this:

Happy Friday Eve!

  2. That cat gif is my new favorite (replacing this, obviously: http://dc528.4shared.com/img/GVIDZjSj/s3/1364efecc18/im-a-kitty-cat.gif)

I hope the easy runs (or PT) help work out some of your leg issues!

  3. Gotta be safe running in the dark! I look like a pumpkin, but I bought a Saucony Vizipro running jacket last year that I love. It has the built in LED lights that are USB rechargeable. http://www.amazon.com/Saucony-Vizipro-Jacket-Orange-Medium/dp/B006M3APEU/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

  4. I first opened this in feedly, and the first three gifs were shoved together with the captions, so I had a fun time trying to figure out which part of you felt like what. I'm impressed that you're already back at it. I'm just now back to walking like normal, and the tightness in my calves is still hovering around "YOWCH!" If you could wear the reflective vest at all times, I promise to always be ready with a side-five.

  5. You can be my run motivator - do you have 5 minutes to tweet at me to get out there while you're on your lunch break? LOL

I really like running for time versus distance! Maybe just knowing that there's a really solid end point? Like, no matter how well or bad this goes, I'm done in xx amount of time (um... twss?).

Hope you can figure out eating now that you're not in training (do it after the dessert crawl, obviously). It's definitely hard to scale back once you get used to eating at a certain level, but I'm sure you'll get used to what a normal, non-training amount of food is soon.

  6. Love the pictures, as always - and thanks for the great tip on wearing reflective gear while running. It's a little crazy how quickly the days have gotten shorter!

  7. I've been saving that minion gif for a while...You snooze you lose I suppose.

I ran by feel yesterday and it really felt great...nice to break away from the watch watching (?) now and then and just do what feels right.

  8. Hah, this actually took me less than 10 minutes to put together. I save links as I see them through the weeks, then just throw a post together!

  9. Haha love it! No more PT for me right now! Just slowly rehab and enjoy the cold runs!

  11. Oh I'll be wearing it! as soon as it is delivered! You just have to run in the dark now to get your side five on!

I'm honored you stopped by to comment again! Thank you :)

I hope your legs mend themselves! Take it easy. The Brooks Hanson institute has its runners take 2 weeks off!

  12. Just tell me when you want to run and I'll beat you with your sausage lunch if you don't do it!

It is hard to cut down eating so much sausage... Can't wait until i'm back on my 50-60mpw again to feel normal!

  13. Seriously! I feel like we went summer to winter. How did it get dark so fast?!

    ReplyDelete
  14. You can still use it! I'm sure my 20 visitors won't get mad if you use it!

Nice to have some time to just run pressure free!

  15. no way, this is some hardcore research man. unbelievable.

  16. I am pretty lucky in that I get off work at a time that allows me to run while it is still (mostly) light out... even in the winter. However, if the runs start to become longer then it will definitely be dark by the time I finished. Luckily Eric had got extra reflective vests last year and gave me one :-)

  17. I'm glad you're easing back into it and giving your legs time to heal up. How's the breathing issue that popped up during the race?

I'm all for some kind of morning motivation group (assuming you don't have to be in Chicago to participate)! I love my early morning runs and even the cooler weather, but as the temps drop further below freezing I'll definitely have trouble crawling out of my warm bed! Keep me posted!

  18. awesome :) i get home while it is still semi light out, but running them is family time for me!
You have matching vests? please say you do

  19. Haha - We do actually. But he prefers to wear the jacket that he bought.

I have a nerdy reflector vest that looks like it is from 1978. Maybe I need an update.

  21. Breathing is crap right now. Not sure if something is strained or what,.

Just glad to be back out in the trail!

  22. he should wear both and run with you

  23. naw! retro is in right now! just add some flare to it

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wow, I saw 3 runners pretty much the whole time I was watching the video.

I already bought more reflective gear for my runs outside. I am making an effort to run more outside than on the treadmill. We'll see how that goes. :-)
